I thoroughly enjoyed Dr Zulfikar's talk about the future of the design industry and society as a whole in regard to technology.
Our world is becoming more reliant on technology, and we must rethink the way society should move forward digitally. There have been several cyber attacks that prove some companies are not fully prepared for such digital attacks. Only 49% of businesses have a digital strategy.
But more onto the design concept, autocad drawings are good, but not great. They show a series of lines and not objects which can be mis interpreted and cause errors. Due to the inaccuracy of drawings, they make up 10% of the total construction costs to correct the error.
This is when Dr Zulfikar went on to coding/computing. It has been made a manditory subject accross middle/high schools, but not higher education. At the moment there is such a high demand for designers or even any qualified employee with the ability to code and exploit the possibilites in that industries digital presence.
There would be such potential in keeping coding in higher education as a manditory subject. Most designing softwares are simplified to to make it easier for the majority of users to understand and restricts a lot of potential tools. If designers know basic coding they will be able to enhance and improve the way they design and make them clearer to be created or built on site. This would also reduce the errors made from inaccurate drawings.
If you can make anything into a object you can make them interact with each other giving more detailed outcomes.
Patterns are used often. Design patterns were designed by an architect who wrote the book Canvas for a building.
All buildings have the same patterns, only small details changed in each country to give different looks.
Everything derives from a class, which can then be changed to give different outcomes like
Car – polo
Beetle
Mini
I felt very inspired after this talk into looking into some basic coding to improve my designing skills, I am hoping to study C# or C++, as this would help me in the future as so much can be discovered ad achieved through coding in the design industry. I only need to stick with it and hopefully turn out to be good enough to use it in my design work.
